Step 1: choose your SAP consultant track
There is no single “SAP consultant” job. The key decision is functional (business processes) versus technical (development and systems). Your background usually points the way:

Step 2: learn the business before the software
The most common mistake is memorizing transaction codes without understanding the process. A functional consultant turns business requirements into configuration; if you do not know what a bank reconciliation, a month-end close or an accrual is, you will not know what to configure. Before going deep into SAP:
- Finance: double-entry bookkeeping, chart of accounts, tax, payables and receivables, fixed assets, period-end close and cash management.
- Logistics: procure-to-pay (requisition, purchase order, goods receipt, invoice) and order-to-cash (sales order, delivery, billing, payment).
- Technical: relational databases and SQL, object-oriented programming, APIs and OData.
Step 3: train with hands-on practice
- SAP Learning: SAP publishes free learning journeys at learning.sap.com, aligned with the certification exams.
- SAP Learning Hub: SAP’s paid subscription with extra content and practice systems.
- Practical references: get comfortable in the system with the SAP transaction codes list and the SAP tables list; learning to query data with SE16N is a skill every consultant uses daily.

Step 4: SAP certification

Step 5: how to become an SAP consultant with no experience
- Consultancies and SAP partners: large consultancies and system integrators hire junior and graduate consultants every year and train them on projects. Search for “junior SAP consultant” or “SAP graduate program” on LinkedIn and Indeed.
- Key user at an SAP customer: if you already work in finance, purchasing or logistics at a company that runs SAP, volunteer as a key user on improvement or migration projects. It is the strongest route into a functional role because you already know the business.
- Application support (AMS): support teams handle day-to-day incidents; demanding, but you learn the system fast.
On your CV and LinkedIn profile, highlight your module, certification, the processes you know and any real contact with SAP, even as an end user.
Step 6: specialize and grow
A typical career goes from junior consultant to consultant, senior consultant and then project manager, solution architect or independent contractor. What accelerates growth most is specializing in an area with few experts (treasury, bank communication, S/4HANA migration) and adding some technical skills (tables, debugging, Fiori) to your functional profile.
