SAP FI (Financial Accounting) is the SAP module that records every transaction with a financial impact and produces a company’s statutory accounting: general ledger, balance sheet, profit and loss statement, taxes and customer and vendor accounts. So, what is SAP FI in one sentence? It is the financial core of SAP ERP (ECC) and SAP S/4HANA: the place where everything that happens in purchasing, sales, production or payroll ends up as accounting entries.
This guide, written from an SAP FI consultant’s day-to-day experience, covers what the module does, its sub-modules, the organizational structure, what changed in S/4HANA, the most used T-codes and tables, and how to start learning it.
What is SAP FI used for?
SAP FI is SAP’s external accounting module: it produces the information a company must report to outsiders such as tax authorities, auditors, shareholders and banks. It supports local GAAP and international standards like IFRS and US GAAP, even in parallel within the same system (parallel ledgers).
- Post manual and automatic journal entries to the general ledger.
- Record vendor and customer invoices and monitor due dates.
- Pay vendors and collect from customers (automatic payment run, clearing, dunning).
- Manage house banks, electronic bank statements and bank reconciliation.
- Manage fixed assets and depreciation.
- Calculate and report taxes (VAT, sales tax, withholding tax).
- Run month-end and year-end closing: accruals, foreign currency valuation, financial statements.
The key concept is integration. When the warehouse posts a goods receipt (MM) or billing creates a customer invoice (SD), SAP automatically creates the FI document. That is why an FI consultant must understand the other modules too; see the full map in our list of SAP modules.
SAP FI sub-modules
| Sub-module | Name | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| FI-GL | General Ledger Accounting | Chart of accounts, journal entries, balance sheet and P&L |
| FI-AP | Accounts Payable | Vendors, incoming invoices, payments and clearing |
| FI-AR | Accounts Receivable | Customers, outgoing invoices, incoming payments, dunning, interest |
| FI-AA | Asset Accounting | Acquisitions, retirements, transfers and depreciation |
| FI-BL | Bank Accounting | House banks, bank statements, reconciliation, payment run |
| FI-TV | Travel Management | Travel advances and expenses (often replaced by SAP Concur) |
| FI-SL | Special Purpose Ledger | Ledgers and reports with additional dimensions |
| FI-LC | Legal Consolidation | Group consolidation; in S/4HANA replaced by Group Reporting |
Closely related areas are SAP CO (Controlling, i.e. management/cost accounting), SAP TRM (Treasury and Risk Management), SAP FSCM (Financial Supply Chain Management: credit management, collections, dispute management and Cash Management) and Funds Management (budget control, typical in the public sector). In practice many FI consultants also cover banking and basic treasury, a profile often called SAP FI-TR.
SAP FI organizational structure
- Client: the highest level, a self-contained environment in the system (for example client 100 for production).
- Company code: the legal entity that prepares financial statements; a 4-character key stored in table T001.
- Chart of accounts: the list of G/L accounts used by one or more company codes (defined in OB13).
- Fiscal year variant: defines the fiscal year and periods; K4 (calendar year, 12 periods plus 4 special periods) is the most common.
- Posting period variant: controls which periods are open for posting (OB52).
- Ledgers: the leading ledger (0L) plus parallel ledgers for other accounting principles.
- Segment, profit center and controlling area: link FI with segment reporting and CO.
SAP FI in S/4HANA: what changed
| Topic | SAP ECC | SAP S/4HANA |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting tables | BKPF/BSEG plus totals and index tables (GLT0, FAGLFLEXT, BSIS, BSAS…) | Universal Journal: single table ACDOCA for FI, CO, assets and Material Ledger |
| Customers and vendors | XD01/XK01 (FD01/FK01 in FI) | Business Partner is mandatory (transaction BP) |
| Cost elements | Separate cost elements in CO | Cost elements are G/L accounts (FS00) |
| Asset Accounting | Classic or new Asset Accounting | New Asset Accounting mandatory, real-time posting per ledger |
| User interface | SAP GUI | SAP Fiori and SAP GUI (most classic T-codes still available) |
| Reporting | Batch reports on pre-aggregated totals | Real-time reporting on ACDOCA (Fiori analytical apps) |
An ECC FI consultant adapts quickly to S/4HANA: the accounting logic is the same and most configuration (company code, chart of accounts, payment program, bank statement) carries over. SAP’s official documentation is on the SAP Help Portal.

Example: procure-to-pay in SAP FI
- Purchasing creates a purchase order in MM and the warehouse posts the goods receipt: SAP posts inventory against the GR/IR clearing account.
- The invoice arrives and is verified in MIRO (or posted in FB60 when there is no PO), creating an open item on the vendor account plus input tax.
- On the payment date, treasury runs F110: SAP selects due items, posts the payment and creates the bank file (for example ISO 20022 pain.001).
- The bank returns a pain.002 payment status report and then the bank statement, which is imported and reconciled in FI.
- At month-end the financial statements reflect the whole cycle without manual postings.
SAP FI vs SAP CO vs SAP FICO
SAP FI is financial (external) accounting. SAP CO is controlling (internal) accounting: cost centers, internal orders, profit centers, product costing and profitability analysis. SAP FICO is not a separate module but the name of the combined skill set. Because FI and CO share the Universal Journal in S/4HANA, more and more job postings ask for FICO profiles.
How to learn SAP FI
- Accounting basics first: debits and credits, VAT, reconciliation and closing.
- Processes before configuration: learn to post invoices, pay, collect and close; then learn how each step is configured in SPRO.
- Integration: understand the postings created by MM and SD and how account determination works.
- Official certification: SAP Certified – SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, Financial Accounting (C_TS4FI), a 3-hour system-based assessment with a 60% pass score.
- Career: read what an SAP consultant does day to day.
SAP FI FAQ
What does FI stand for in SAP?
FI stands for Financial Accounting, the module that keeps a company’s statutory books.
Does SAP FI still exist in S/4HANA?
Yes. General ledger, payables, receivables, assets and banking are part of SAP S/4HANA Finance, built on the Universal Journal (ACDOCA).
Is SAP FI hard to learn?
With an accounting or finance background it is one of the most accessible modules, because the logic is accounting logic. Integration and configuration are the hard parts and are best learned on projects.
Is SAP FI a good career?
Demand for FI and FICO consultants stays strong because of ECC to S/4HANA migrations: mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 (ECC) ends at the end of 2027.
