SAP modules are the functional areas that make up SAP’s ERP system: finance, controlling, procurement, sales, production, maintenance, human resources and more. Each module supports a business process, but all of them share one database, so a sales order in SD updates inventory in MM and accounting in FI at the same moment. That integration is what makes SAP different from a set of separate applications.

Finance: FI and CO
SAP FI handles statutory accounting and SAP CO handles internal cost accounting. Together they form the SAP FICO skill set. In S/4HANA both share the Universal Journal (table ACDOCA). Read more in what is SAP FI.
Logistics: MM, SD, LE and EWM
MM covers procure-to-pay: purchase requisition, purchase order, goods receipt and invoice verification. SD covers order-to-cash: sales order, delivery and billing. LE manages deliveries and shipping. For warehouses, the successor of classic WM in S/4HANA is SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), which can run embedded in S/4HANA.
Manufacturing and assets: PP, QM, PM and PS
PP plans what to produce and when (MRP, BOMs, production orders); in S/4HANA classic MRP is complemented by MRP Live. QM manages quality across procurement, production and sales. PM, now part of SAP S/4HANA Asset Management, handles equipment maintenance. PS manages projects with WBS structures, budgets and costs.

Yes, although SAP now talks about lines of business and end-to-end processes rather than modules. Consultants and job ads still use the classic acronyms. The approximate mapping is:

There is no official number, since SAP organizes its portfolio by products and lines of business. In practice the ERP has about a dozen core functional modules (FI, CO, MM, SD, PP, QM, PM, PS, LE/WM, HCM, TRM, FSCM) plus technical ones (Basis, ABAP, BW, integration, Fiori).
What are the main SAP modules?

Which SAP module is most in demand?
FI/CO and logistics (MM, SD) concentrate most openings, together with ABAP on the technical side. S/4HANA migrations especially favor consultants with S/4HANA Finance experience.
Can SAP modules be bought separately?
In SAP ERP and S/4HANA all modules are part of one system; companies decide which processes to license and activate. Cloud solutions such as SuccessFactors, Ariba and Concur are subscribed separately, and small businesses have a different product, SAP Business One.
