What is an SAP consultant?

SAP is standard software that fits thousands of different companies because it is configurable. The SAP consultant decides how it is configured and does the configuration. An SAP FI consultant, for example, defines the chart of accounts, company codes, taxes, payment methods and bank connectivity; an SAP MM consultant defines how the company buys and values inventory; a technical consultant builds what the standard does not cover.
What does an SAP consultant do? (job description)
A typical SAP consultant job description includes these responsibilities:
- Gather requirements in workshops with business users (fit-to-standard sessions).
- Design the solution: decide how each requirement is met with standard SAP and document it.
- Configure the system (customizing) in the implementation guide (SPRO) or configuration apps.
- Write functional specifications for reports, interfaces, forms and enhancements when the standard is not enough.
- Migrate data: master data and balances from the legacy system.
- Test: unit, integration and user acceptance testing.
- Train users and write documentation.
- Support the system after go-live: solve incidents, analyze data with tools such as SE16N and propose improvements.

A typical day
It depends on the phase, but a typical project day mixes meetings with users or developers, configuration and testing in the development system, documentation (designs, specifications, test cases) and answering questions. In support roles, incidents dominate: a payment that does not appear in the payment run, a bank statement that fails to post, an error during month-end close.

SAP consulting (or SAP consultancy) is the service of implementing, migrating, extending or supporting SAP for a client company. An SAP consultant can work in three settings:

SAP certification
SAP offers official certifications by module and level (Associate, Specialist, Professional). According to sap.com, an exam package costs USD 276 and includes two exam attempts. Certification is not mandatory, but it helps a lot when you are starting out.
SAP consultant salary
According to Glassdoor (2026 data), the median total pay of an SAP consultant in the United States is around USD 132,000 a year, with a typical total pay range of USD 99,000 to 181,000. Pay depends on experience, module, country and whether you are employed or freelance; S/4HANA finance, treasury, migration and integration skills are among the best paid.

The future of SAP consulting
- S/4HANA migrations: SAP ECC 6.0 mainstream maintenance ends in 2027 (with extension options to 2030 and 2033), which keeps demand for consultants high for years.
- Cloud: RISE with SAP, S/4HANA Cloud and SAP BTP push toward a clean core with extensions outside the ERP.
- AI: SAP is embedding AI in its applications (for example its Joule assistant). It automates repetitive work and increases the value of consultants who understand the business and can design processes.
